I'm fundraising for my daughter, Kira!

I have set myself a personal challenge for 2024 and am taking part in Run2Cure Neuroblastoma. Run2Cure is a charity fun run and raises funds for the aggressive childhood cancer neuroblastoma.

Neuroblastoma is a cancer affecting young children with the average age being just 2 years of age and survival rates for aggressive neuroblastoma being just 1 in 2.

So in addition to my own goal, I want to make a difference to the young children affected. If you are able to make a donation, be it a few dollars or more, I would be very grateful.

My why

Saturday 2nd Mar
Why do I walk?
I walk for my daughter Kira, for all the children fighting, for those yet to be diagnosed and for our angel warriors. I walk to raise awareness of Neuroblastoma and the plight of the children and their families who battle this disease.Β

Kira was diagnosed in January 2022 as a sprightly 3.5yo. She barrelled through the first part of treatment, 6 cycles of induction chemotherapy and a marathon 12 hour surgery that saw her sacrifice one of her kidneys.Β

She hit a wall during the Consolidation Phase of treatment. Two intense, high dose cycles with "stem cell rescue" using autogolous bone marrow transplants which absolutely obliterate the immune system. It was during the second of these cycles that Kira contracted COVID while in hospital. Already compromised by treatment and fighting systemic mucositis and sepsis, the COVID progressed to multi system organ failure and Kira spent 25 days in PICU, ventilated and on dialysis. Literally at deaths door, she was not expected to survive.Β

She emerged from that experience like a butterfly from a dark cocoon, learnt to walk again and slowly marched into Radiotherapy and then Immunotherapy. 18 months of treatment, the darkest and hardest days of our lives.Β

Now 5 years and 9 months old, she is in school and outwardly a normal little girl. She is currently in remission. Survivorship presenting its own unique challenges alongside with the tentative joy of stretching ourselves back into living again.Β

In this new season of our cancer journey, Kira is managing as a single kidney case, where her solo kidney carries the burden of having been bashed by chemotherapy while it single handedly does the job of two. She has an uneven gait due to muscle wastage suffered during her PICU stint and she has bilateral hearing loss due to chemo toxicity.Β

She is scarred both physically and emotionally. The trauma of treatment peaking through at the strangest of times during seemingly normal activities.Β

But she is also bright and curious, cheerful and intense and determined to explore the world. She is living life hard and with purpose. I'm just along for the ride, for as long as it lasts.Β

This is her story πŸ’œπŸŽ—οΈ she is my why.Β
